Our vision

What drives us

Our vision is to support children in need in such a way that they learn to build a hopeful future themselves. We do this from a Christian identity. To us, that means that every child deserves unconditional love and deserves to have access to all basic needs. We emphasize the importance of valuable relationships in which children learn to look at themselves in a healthy way, interact with others and find their place in society.

Where we work

Our work takes place in Goma, Eastern Congo.

In Goma, on the eastern side of the Democratic Republic of Congo, we support children who have become vulnerable due to poverty, conflict and instability.

What we do is based on three principles.

The power of Hope and Future

1

SELF-RELIANCE instead of DEPENDENCE

Children are naturally resilient and eager to learn, but trauma disrupts this. We offer a safe environment as a basis for a hopeful future. The children follow an extensive trauma processing program with lessons at their level, supported by sports and games. In this way they become more resilient and receive the tools and guidance that stimulate healthy development.

2

CONNECTION WITHIN THE COMMUNITY

The answer for children in need can be found within their own culture. A child grows up within its own specific culture and community. We not only look at the child himself, but also at his/her context. We actively search for family, enter into discussions and provide mediation where necessary. So that children feel safe again and regain their place in their own community.

3

PROVIDING BASIC NEEDS

Children in need are children whose basic needs of food, shelter, education and hygiene are threatened. These basic needs are threatened by various factors. Consider this: an unsafe environment due to conflicts, poverty, social threats, no access to good education and/or healthy food/clean drinking water.

I believe that entrepreneurship, responsibility and faith are not mutually exclusive. They actually reinforce each other. That is why within Hoop & Toekomst I actively think about how we organize partners, projects and resources in a smart way, so that children in need are not only helped, but have a long-term perspective.
